The Power of People Skills

Many of us, believe the old adage; "It's not what you know but who you know" however more than that, as Narshad L. Warfield states in Unleash The Winner Within You, "it's not what you know, or who you know but who wants to know you!"

It is important to remember that relationships around and the unassuming person standing next to you might be your ticket to the next level in your dream. they may be the very key.We sometimes miss out because we don't know them or they don't seem to be influential. There are people that I know that have spoken more wisdom in my life than those of  "importance". Now I am not saying that you should not cherish those who have arrived and experience success in their areas of expertise. What I am saying is this, don't discount anyone. You may never know if the person you are snubbing your nose at is the on person that will affect radical change in your life.

In the Bible it talks about entertaining strangers because you never know if one is an angel. What I know about angels is there to work for you or against you. I am sure it's would be based on how you treat them. I am not a trusting person, however, I am learning to use discernment when it comes to people. Some may seem useless to you but in actuality they are very needed. Some may talk a good game and have no use to you at all. Nonetheless no one should be discarded and pushed aside.

Developing people skills is important. Learn how to say thank you, please and take the time to truly hear what is being said in conversation. Here is a few other tips from Narshad Warfield:

1. Greet People with a warm smile and firm handshake
2. Introduce yourself and ask people their name.
3. Ask where they are from.
4. Ask about their family.
5. Ask about their pets.
6. Ask about their profession.
7. Ask where they have been
8. Ask about their hobbies/interests.
9. Ask people what they think.

I remember another old adage; treat people the way you want to be treated. If you feel that people overlook your potential, is it because you have overlooked someone else? Just a thought. Go out and make new friends and build genuine relationships. Remember you don't become successful by yourself. It's a group effort. Smile!

The War For My Mind Series Day 1

I believe that we should find inspiration from all sources. As we journey through this world, we need to understand that our thoughts, words and actions create our reality. As I think about this I am reminded of why it is important to understand how our mind functions. Over the next few days, I am going to share some life lessons with you. Don't worry, I am always growing and will not run out of valuable content to for. Let's call this...The War For My Mind.

Okay so we have best laid plans. We have planned out our life and what we will do if and when. What happens when your plans fail? What happens when you do something that you had not planned on doing? Do we just give up? I think not.

Here's how this series will work, I will talk about some tough things that I have learned and I aim to make you think about your life. More importantly I want you to think about your thoughts, your words, your actions and finally the results from all these. Then I want you to take action. It's a war for your mind and you have to be fully engaged in this war or you will lose. Ready? Let's Go

Day 1:

The Problem:

I am convinced that people don't really want to hurt each other. We don't wake up in the morning thinking, who can I hurt today? Okay well most people don't. Let's deal with the majority of the people. Sounds fair? Good. So we wake up with the intention to make the day a great one by achieving our goals and while we are at it helping our fellow humans accomplish a goal or two also. However, somehow, during the day, a decision is made and that decision requires an action and those actions bring about words and by the end of the day, we are scratching our heads wondering how that all happened.

Does this sound familiar: "how could you say that?' "How could you do that?" "What did I ever do to you to make you do this?" I am sure a few more come to your mind even now. What I have learned is even with our best laid plans, we can get side tracked and we can hurt others. Sometimes it's selfish and intentional and sometimes it's not.  We just needed someone to listen to us, someone to love us, we were missing something in our lives and saw an opportunity to get it.

What we focus on becomes a major part of our thoughts. When we start to feel empty, or in need of something, it is our human nature to seek it out. We have plans to take the family on a vacation. We start looking into spots that we will enjoy and then your wife forgets to make your dinner. Or your son does not take out the trash. Your daughter wrecks the car. Your boss decides not to give you the promotion etc... We start to focus on the changes we are experiencing. We start to feel underappreciated even misused. Maybe more small things happen, you still try to overlook them but you are becoming more aware of how much you would prefer to hang with your friends than spend time with your family. The vicious cycle is in play it ends with you having a major family brawl and the vacation gets cancelled.

Now after a time of calming, you find out there were legit reasons certain events occurred. This knowledge would have changed how you processed the actions of the others. It did not make it better but it did now make sense. You feel like a heel for jumping to conclusions but no one in your family will look you in the eye. Even though you plan a quick get away, it nothing compared to what it could have been.

The Solution:

1. Notice when you start to feel a certain way. (Empty, neglected, misunderstood, etc...)
2. Express your needs immediately
3. Listen with your heart and not your head; hear what is not being said in the midst of what is being said.
4. Step away from the problem and come back when your emotions are not raw.
5. Look for the solution that will bring peace and not just completion
6. Include all parties in the solution.
7. Never speak out of anger. There are ways to get your point across without using angry and hurtful words. Remember, this is a person that you love, respect and need.

The Benefit:

When you take a moment to understand that we can blow things out of portion when we assume what others think or mean, then it is easier for us to hear what they have to say. Conversing with others to get an understanding is always better than burning a bridge. Even though the bridge can be rebuilt, it will never be the same. This way, you preserve your relationships and you are able to stick to your plans to push forward on purpose.

Let's Be Real They Don't Like You

In the world of social media it is all about the like, know and trust. With hundreds of thousand people pulling on you each day what gets noticed are the post we want to see. Those from the people we know personal and have a vested interest in and those that we have gone to like over a course of weeks, months and sometimes even years.

In my many horrors of trying to learn social media I have made some horrendous mistakes only to find out after the fact that the mistake was made. NOT GOOD. As a business owner I was shooting myself in the foot and not even knowing it. When I stepped back and really looked at the Internet as a place to meet and greet people and make relationships just as valuable as the ones I was cultivating in my real life efforts. I noticed a change in my interactions. People started responding to me and that made me feel good.

One day I ask a friend that had been my friend on several social media platforms why we had not connected before. I mean we had know each other over four years. She said something that really shocked me. She said, "I did not like you back then." I could not respond. I sat there looking at those words that no one wants to hear or read. What I had I done to this woman that she had made such a determination. When I did respond all I could say was "Why" She continued, "You seemed superficial." That was another dagger in my heart. How could I, Coach Linda, be anything other than authentic? What was her real issue. As we talked she cut and paste some of my earlier post from Myspace, Facebook and other sites. My jaw dropped.

If I had been on her end reading the posts that I had put out, I would have not liked myself either. At times I was negative and confrontational, other times I was loving and gushy and then there were the straight sales pitches with no content value or connection at all. So, it was not that my offerings were not good, it was that the people that were reading them did not know me enough to like me and trust was no one on the horizon.

When building relationships, make sure that you keep in mind, be yourself. Those that are suppose to like , know and trust will and those that are not your target will continue to ignore. Ask a friend that you have connected with recently, what are your thoughts about me and what I do... You might find out the truth is they just don't like you.

5 Ways to Sell You To Others

1. Start With A Compelling Profile
Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.  Pick one of those 3 as your home and get really good at it.  Don’t waste your time (or others) by pinging hundreds of social networks that you never frequent.  I started out on all of them then realized that without focusing on one network I was spreading myself too thin to be an authority on ANY of them.
2.  Hook Up With Other Up n’ Comers:
Get to know others in your field or niche that have the same goal as you.  I’m not saying give them all your secrets, but be willing to share ideas and experiences that you have learned from and they will do the same.
Have you ever had a friend that made it big before you did?  How did you take it? We can either get jealous and angry that it wasn’t us that made it, or we can put all that silliness behind, celebrate with them and learn from their experience.  Chances are they may take you right along the success pathway with them!
3.  Hook Up With The Influencers:
Borrow the influence of others if you don’t have much of your own yet. You will be glad that you made friends with a few fire starters when you have them start tweeting out your blog posts and then your product launches for you.  Just remember, the big names in Social Media are being pitched all the time, so be real with them.
Try to find conversations that you can fit into and add value to.  If you can’t, then start a topic of conversation of your own.  Comment on their blogs, meet them at conferences and MeetUps, spend time getting to know who they are before you start telling them who YOU are.
4.  Be Unique:
When I buy something for myself I tend to look for things that are a little different than what everyone else is buying.  I may like the main idea behind a trending product, but generally I don’t want to be just like everyone else.  I’m weird that way.
I’m that way about my writing too.  I like the ideas that many people are talking about in social media, but I don’t say it the same way.  That’s another thing that’s cool about social media…it allows everyone to be themselves.  You can build your own community of people that like you because you don’t follow the crowds or you’re not afraid to say when something really sucks.
You’re selling yourself and YOUR personality, so be different.  Be liked, or be hated, but be the best you can be at either! icon wink 5 Tips On How To Market Yourself As Your Main Product
5.   Choose Who/What You Promote Wisely:
Another old saying to remember is, you are who your friends are. Like it or not, who you associate with or the products you promote all affect the perception people have of you.
I have worked with some top names in MLM business opportunities. I have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly side of network marketing.  Because of that, I deliberately separated my blog and my name from any association with that niche.  When it comes to business opportunities, I am very hesitant to promote to my community.
I would still talk to any of these MLM leaders and I appreciate their personalities, but the image I want to display is one of authenticity and professionalism. And by professionalism I mean knowing my stuff and calling things as they really are.
If you don’t get anything else out of this article, I hope you walk away with this one concept:
"You will never get people to really like you for who you are if you are never really YOU in front of them." -
Market yourself as authentic you.  Like people.  Smile.  Care.  Listen. Learn.  Share.  In the process you’ll find that opportunity to promote your products but what people will remember is YOU.
By the way, if you don’t find fulfillment or happiness in what you do, you might as well go back to having a job working for someone else because you will never be happy until you are happy doing what you do everyday. Just sayin…
What makes you decide to buy from someone?  What quality or perception did you pick up that made you say yes to that person?  How can you adapt the same qualities into your own personal branding plan of action?  Can you see where you can do things differently now?  Please share your comments below.
Pick this up from somone, cant remember where I got it from but it does work.

Avoiding And Resolving Conflict

The effects of conflict in our lives can be widespread and costly. Studies have shown that 24% to 60 % of our time and energy is spent dealing with with anger. Anger is the number one cause of conflicts. Anger leads to decreased productivity on our jobs, in our businesses and in our relationships. anger also leads to increased stress, hampered performance, absenteeism, and its most extreme result is violence and death.

Conflicts can manifest from a number of factors and can be individual or group focused. Competition is a sore spot for conflicts to fester. Whether it is in your relationships, on the job, or business owners of the same niche. the easiest way to resolve conflict quickly is to avoid it in the first place, here are some steps to help you do just that:

1. Communicate: Conflict happens when communication breaks down. People are not on the same page and each side has strong opinions. Leaders should also communicate the goals of the organization, group or assignment and work with individuals to help them feel significant in each step. this is not to say hold their hands but take a moment to hear them out and help them see the bigger picture. Most important treat every one the same.

2. Listen: You have one mouth and two hears. that is not a mistake. You should do twice as much listen as you do talking. make sure you hear what the people are saying. Acknowledge and clarify what you have heard without drawing your own conclusions. Make sure that you support their feeling and provide them with the resources to accomplish their goals.

3.Set boundaries: You can be professional, empathetic, and compassionate toward  individuals without crossing the line of giving away your power. Adapt to the environment you are in but DO not give away your power to choose.

4. Nip it in the bud: If you notice a situation becoming heated, tempers or voices are rising, address the situation as soon as possible. Speak about teh elephant in the room as it were. Listen carefully and then offer a solution based on what you heard. Resolve it in a matter that this cannot repeat itself.

Be Careful Whom You Trust

Have you ever been in a position where you believe that all those in your circle of influence like you? You do what you are told and you generate fantastic results. You get along with everyone including those that over you, (i.e. bosses, spouse, siblings, parents, etc...)

Then one day you speak about a management practice you do not agree with or you say something about your spouse that does not paint them in the best light. You and your friends are having a nice conversation about life and it just bubbles to the surface. You are among friends and you are just venting. Maybe like so many, you write it on a post on Facebook or Twitter. You might even blog about it. This is when everything changes. Suddenly, you are called in on the carpet. Your manager or spouse is confronting you about something you said and they are not pleased at all. Now it's brought to your attention in an ugly and spiteful way. Everything you said has been twisted, contorted and just plain misunderstood. Maybe they take out a list of things you said and when you said them. You realize someone has been keeping track of your venting, your blowing off steam and has given a full report to them. Who could have disliked you this much. Who could be so full of hate to twist your words and meaning like this? Who could stab you in the back this way?

Many times you will not find out who did, or you will find out but their true motives will be masked in the anger in their eyes. You are hurt and now your relationship is strained. You are full of regret and remorse. Which ever it is, learn the bigger lesson here. Keep your mouth shut. Whether it is in life with your intimate relationships, or in business...big mouths don't get ahead. A moment of venting can cause a storm in a relationship that could have just been water under the bridge.

We all have times that we want to speak about a situation or give a piece of our mind to someone. but i say keep your righteous mind and hold you tongue. Somethings are left better unsaid.

How To Feast On Healthy And Delicious Relationships—And Protect Yourself From Poisonous People By Martha Beck

The Company You Keep
As soon as you could bring your baby hands to your mouth, you instinctively began tasting everything you could reach, learning which substances tasted poisonous, which were tasty. You were born also with a set of analogous social instincts. As a child, you clearly felt people's affect on you. Some made you feel happy and safe; others scared or repelled you.

Unfortunately, you were soon taught to override your instincts. "Give me a kiss!" adults may have insisted. "Share your toys with little Chris! Be nice!" Bit by bit, you learned not to pull away from poisonous people. Now you may voluntarily interact with people who leave you feeling wounded, betrayed, or confused. You need to re-learn your instincts for keeping toxic people at bay and attracting nourishing relationships. You'll need two skills: Screening and boundary-setting.

1. Screening People
This is the mental equivalent of a baby's taste-testing. Whenever you sense someone is lying, hostile, or unsafe, you feel a set of subtle psychological signals that can best be described with one simple word: "Ick!" Safe, supportive people create an inner "Yum!" Their company makes you feel healthier and stronger.

To use your screening instincts, ask yourself, "How do I feel after being with this individual?" (Don't ask how you feel when you're with the person—social triggers override instincts while you're in someone's presence.) The "aftertaste" is your best screening mechanism. Use it to help set boundaries appropriate to your instinctive perceptions.

2. Setting Boundaries
Picture yourself at the center of infinite concentric circles. Someone in the ring next to you can touch you any time. People several circles out can talk to you, but not touch you. Those who are, say, 50 circles from the center have to shout for you to hear them.

Now think of someone you know. Call this person X. Imagine X standing in the circle next to you. If you feel an "Ick!" and want to physically pull back, X is too close. Move X back a circle—or two, or three, or 20—until the "Ick!" subsides. If you feel yourself wanting to lean forward toward X, you've gone too far.

3. Find the distance that feels balanced.
This distance is a rough indication of how much you instinctively trust each person. Keep it in mind when deciding how much time and information you spend with them. If you must spend time with a person you mistrust or dislike, be polite but private. Don't leave your center circle by offering to do things for them or by attacking them. Simply don't engage.

4. The Nourishing Life
Screening and boundary setting may not seem "nice" to your social mind, but they're the best steps you can take to surround yourself with people who nourish you while relegating toxic people to a distance where they can't poison you. They'll make your social life healthy and delicious. You knew that when you were born. Reclaim your true nature and know it again.

A Better You, NOW?

Everyone has a “get rich quick” scheme!

Every one has adopted the “name it and claim” fabrication!

Every where there is a “process” or “program” for attracting the love of your life, all the money you desire and the body of a God/dess!

And it seems that everyone is an “expert” of this or a “guru” of that with lofty promises of making you a guru too!

In the words of Malcolm X, You’ve been had! Hoodwinked! Bamboozled and led astray! And not necessarily in this order!

Well DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE! And it’s all “hype!” You cannot microwave your way to health in 10 minutes! And success is not a mirage! Health, Love, Money and Fame will not come by way of smoke and mirrors! So stop falling for the okie-doke! You will not blink your eyes and land on top of the mountain, neither will you amass fame and fortune in your life by fast talking, quick thinking, scheming lies!
Sorry,  I must keep it 100!  I give it to you straight, no artificial flavors, sugars are additives! Hard work, has become a term of profanity and success has become a con game!

Well I for one have had it! So if you are ready to roll up your sleeves and have the drive, guts and determination to get in the driver’s seat of your life and stop being persuaded by the “green grass” in the other guy’s yard and are ready to take care of your own lawn and sow your own seeds so that you may reap a bountiful harvest, then let’s do it together.

In the words of Michael Jackson, “I’m starting with the man in the mirror and I’m asking him to change his ways. No message could have been any clearer”…IF you want to make this world a better place you gotta start with you.

Why I Do What I Do?

I love coaching! I approach every new client with enthusiasm because I know I can take them to the next level... and beyond. I know if they stick with me, they'll have what they want in life. I work with people who are looking for more fulfillment in their lives, whether it's to enhance a life that's already satisfactory, or to implement a complete lifestyle or career change. I excel in coaching people from the inside out - making the internal changes as well as the external. My unique coaching process sparks insights, increases personal power and expands my clients' ability to create what they want in a way that lasts a lifetime.

I'm also a very practical and down-to-earth coach. I help clients organize and prioritize everything in their lives, from balancing home and work, to managing a family. And while they're getting organized, they learn how to stop procrastinating, get out of overwhelm and make time for self-care.

Just as in coaching, I have brought that same desire and passion into my writing and speaking. It's not just a career for me but it's a way to leave a great impact on this world.

How Come Or Why?

“What does not take me out, makes me stronger.”

Many of us say this phrase after we have come out of a trial or hardship. We tend to get a sense of empowerment from this statement. The real question here is do we truly believe this statement. Is this just one of those statement that sounds good after a period of stressful situations. What if you are still in the midst of your dilemma, can you say this phrase? Can you claim the triumph even then? Do you ask “Why” me, why did I have to suffer? Do you harbor bitterness and unforgiveness?

You see many of us are so preoccupied with the “WHY” something happen that we may never get to the “HOW COME”. With that said, the question becomes, “How come this occurred and what am I suppose to learn? Exploring this can be daunting, so here are a few tips.

You need to ask yourself what is my pain. A doctor prescribes medication because of the symptoms the patient says they are experiencing. More simply put, when you go to the doctor with a pain in your stomach, you describe it to the doctor and he does an examination. With the information you have given him and what he finds through his examination, he then prescribes a medication regiment that will allow healing to occur. Now, it is understandable that the medication itself does not heal the body but what it does do is cause the pain to subside. In the absence of your discomfort, your body can then heal itself. What a concept, the medical profession has taught us to get rid of the pain so the process of healing can happen. If you ask yourself this question, do not use other words like what is the problem or who is my problem. Stay focused on you. Moving from what is my pain to what is the problem, you are minimizing your discomfort. It is like taking an Advil for a toothache. You may feel okay for a while but eventually the pain is going to come back because you have not dealt with the real issue and no healing is occurring.

Knowing what your pain is will lead to, “Why am I stuck?” Many will try to brush past this. If you have ever had an open wound, you know that it must heal from the inside out. This process can take a while and if you are not careful, the skin will begin to close on the surface but the wound is not total healed underneath. When this occurs, you have to reopen the wound to allow the healing to take place correctly. The same is true for inner healing. You must allow the inside to be healed before it will show on the surface. No facades that will hide the festering boil underneath. Being stuck in a rut and not understanding why things happened, can only lead to repetitious behaviors. These behaviors will keep you living in misery and regret, making one bad decision after another because you have not learned how to avoid it.

This is when you have to define the how come. The “how come” is logical reasoning. The “how come” will bring the change in your behavior you have been looking for. It will help you learn the lesson life was teaching you. For instance, maybe you were in that bad situation because you needed to learn self worth. The “how come” only comes with clarity of vision and after you probe deep inside yourself.

A Woman Healed of Life's Experiences

The one thing we need but many of us struggle to get is respect. In life, we will go through some hard times and if we are lucky, we will be able to come out on the winning side. However, what about the one that are caught in the cracks. Is there hope for the woman whose been abused (emotionally, mentally, physically or socially)? Who is there to let that woman know there is hope in her hopeless situation?

We hear so much about sisterhood yet we are set apart. We gossip about one another, steal each other's men and if we get the chance, we will ruin another reputation so we look good. Now does this sound like sisterhood?

There is a story about a woman, who as a teenager suffered being molested, verbally abused and lived in a house of raging with domestic violence. This woman grew up with anger issues and never tried to deal with them. She had relationship after relationship fail. One day she came to the realization that the life she was living was just a shadow of what could be. She did not have to live with the pain, frustration and depression. She could rise above it. She could be free. However, she knew that wit would take some restoration of her inner emotions. She would have to learn how to look at life differently, not using her own reasoning because it was skewed and fragile.

She sought help from counselors and coaches that help her see past the hurt, habits and hang-ups. She was able to start a relationship on a healthy note and those negative friends – well she was able to influence them to be more positive. This did not happen over night it only started with a single step.

The first step can be the hardest however, if you are truly ready for healing to occur in your life then you will allow this step to take place, including removing all negative and unhealthy influences in your life. Many times, it is what we allow in our lives that hinder us the most. The woman mentioned above had to deal with the past in order to maintain her present and secure her future.

We learned in history that if we do not learn from history it is bound to repeat itself. Well, this is true even in our lives. If we are not willing to learn from bad decisions, our fears, our failure and, even more importantly, our successes then we are bound to repeat them. Dr. Susan Jeffers says, “Life is not a struggle but an opportunity”. Additionally, you only get a single opportunity to make it count. Do not live with regret and remorse. Not to make light of the experiences you have been through, Nevertheless, if she can learn to let go of the pain and anger, then why not you?

Only Those That Can See The Invisible...

"Only those that can see the invisible, can achieve the impossible."

What exactly does this mean. Well, let's talk about your goals:
  • Where are you headed?
  • What things are you trying to accomplish?
  • Are you settling or sacrificing?

Your answer to these questions will determine if you are seeing the invisible or making excuses because of the visible.

Many people want to be significant in their communities and relationships but they are not willing to put in the effort. Thus letting what they DO see hinder what could be. Now listen, I am not talking about "make-believe", or "faking it 'til you make it" stuff. I am talking about creating energy that will allow you to produce real success. This is the real raw deal. If you want to be something in your life then you have to let go of excessive baggage. You know that stuff you been carrying from your childhood, the love/hate relationships with parents, friends and other family members. The unforgiveness of those that hurt you, the self pity, self loathing, and EXCUSES.

Say this with me..."I am my worst enemy". You cant blame your failure or successes on any one but you. Either you did what you were suppose to do and succeeded or you didn't do what you were suppose to do and failed. The common denominator is YOU. So how do you get pass this? I am so glad that you asked that question. Here's how:

1. Stop making excuses and deal with the issues.
2. Have someone that you know will be brutally honest paint a word picture of you.
3. Once completed, pull out the things that need to be changed.
4. Follow someone that has the success you want to achieve or has a similar dream.
5. Start to eliminate toxic relationships and habits.

Start there and watch how much clarity comes to you. Remember only those that can see the invisible, can achieve the impossible. By the way, it is only impossible because no one else has done it. Therefore, get out there and do something.

Would you like to be one of the six?  Then this is what YOU need to do to be considered:

First, You must be a follower of this blog (Your Empowerment Coach). Well, come on, If you don't follow who will? Well many will but this will allow you to help others while you help yourself.

Secondly,

  • Make a 3-minute-or-less video of yourself, telling me your top 3 priorities for what you want to improve in your life.  Then post your short video to YouTube.com, and tag it "90-Day Coaching Contest" so I can find it.
  • Send me a short email making the case for your coaching. What will coaching help you achieve?  Why? Do this in 500 words or less. Email it to coachlindahillman@live.com. Include your contact information, which will not be published, but is needed so we can reach you. Indicate your permission for your video and essay to be used in whole or in part on Your Success Coach blog. Entries without contact information or permission EXPRESSLY indicated will not be considered for the contest.
  • Finally: Tell your friends and colleagues about this opportunity--even if you don't want to participate, you may have colleagues or friends who'd benefit from this type of coaching. (And yes, while I coach both men and women.) Don't miss this chance to try! Leave your questions in the comments and I'll do my best to answer them.
So recap...
If you are committed to living the best life possible and you are looking for someone that can help you shake your world and make some necessary moves then this contest is for you. Remember no commitment plus no effort equals no results. So make the commitment today. If it came to you without a fight you would not want it right? So Fight for your right to succeed.

*Please note: I am not looking for the highest-quality video or best edited video. Although, putting effort into your video shows your level of commitment, it really isn't necessary for you to win. Just put it this way, I am looking for people who are commitment and determined to make a change in their lives, conveying that message is what is important to me. I am simply looking for someone who wants results - weight loss, healed relationships, increased income, business success, etc. Don't worry about competing with others, just compete with yourself and do your best! Talk directly to me. Let ME know YOU want this.
